The Emerald Mountain Expressway was developed in the early 1990s as part of a broader effort to improve mobility in rapidly growing Elmore County. Increased development in the Emerald Mountain community and surrounding areas created a demand for better road connections to Wetumpka and Montgomery.
The Expressway was funded and built entirely by a private investor, creating a tolled route that could be maintained without public tax dollars. The Expressway opened in 1994, providing a vital new link between east Montgomery, Interstate I-85, and U.S. Highway 231.
Over the years, the Expressway has expanded its capabilities, adding improved signage, lighting, and Freedom Pass electronic tolling to make travel faster and more convenient. Today, it remains a preferred route for thousands of drivers each week.
